“Tell me about yourself” opens almost every interview, and it is the question that makes the most people freeze. The good news is that it is completely predictable. You can build one strong answer and reuse it for the rest of your career.

Use three moves, in this order: Present, then Past, then Future. Here is the shape of it — swap in your own details and say each line out loud.

  1. Right now I’m a final-year commerce student at Lucknow University.

Present. Open with what is true today. One sentence, no history yet — you are giving the interviewer somewhere to stand.

  2. Before this, I interned at a logistics firm, where I handled client calls for six months.

Past. One or two highlights that matter for this role. Not your whole CV — the interviewer is holding it.

  3. And I’m now looking for a role where I can do that client-facing work full time.

Future. Close by pointing at the job you are sitting in the room for. This is the sentence most people leave out.

Sixty to ninety seconds, and not a word more

That is the whole answer. Three moves, about a minute, in your own voice rather than memorised corporate language. If it sounds like a written paragraph read aloud, it is too long.

Practise it until it flows without sounding rehearsed. The goal is not a perfect answer — it is a calm one. Once you have spoken confidently in the first minute, the rest of the interview stops feeling like an interrogation.
